Social Media Marketing: Are You Doing It Right?

Social Media Marketing: Are You Doing It Right?
January 27, 2018 Clare

“Social media is not just an activity; it is an investment of valuable time and resources.”

Truer words have never been spoken by marketing legend and Twitter celebrity Sean Gardner (@2morrowknight). And with over 900K followers on Twitter alone, Gardner definitely knows what he’s talking about. So what are you investing your time and money into when you decide to take on the wide (and sometimes scary) world of social media, as a business? Are you doing it right? And, mostly importantly, are you seeing increased enquiries and sales as a result?

Relatable content

First thing’s first. You need to generate content that will catch the attention of your target audience. This means creating content in a variety of mediums depending on the social media platform you’re using. High-quality graphics, entertaining and informative videos, witty insights into your industry and informative external links are all great ways to communicate with your audience. This will assist you in establishing a community via your social media business presence.

You may think that once you have gathered all of this content, you can just put it out into the universe willy-nilly and you’ll see the follows, likes, shares and comments popping up every second. Unfortunately, however, that’s not quite how it works. Timing is paramount. Do your research and know when your audience is the most active on a specific social media platform. If you’re targeting stay at home parents on Facebook, they aren’t going to be scrolling through their newsfeed during school drop off or pickup times; they’ll be too busy.

Knowing where and when to engage your target audience is a mixture of common sense, investigation, experimentation and actual algorithm. What’s a social media algorithm? It’s a whole other ball game, where specific platforms such as Instagram sort the content that appears in a user’s feed based on its relevance to the user, rather than the time that it was posted. These algorithms can be difficult to track and understand; they’re constantly changing and evolving, and no one platform has the same algorithm. This can sound a little overwhelming. But there are ways to boost your business’s organic posts so that there’s a greater likelihood that they will appear in your audiences feeds, despite interference from algorithms.

It’s all about engagement, and this is where the ‘time’ part of Gardner’s quote is really emphasised. The more likes, comments and shares that your posts get, the more likely it is that the post will turn up in your followers’ feeds including those who are connected to them. There are several ways that you can actively engage your audience to encourage this behaviour:

  • Ask questions of your audience in your posts.
  • Create polls.
  • Stimulate discussion.
  • Like and comment on other people’s posts.
  • Create videos to keep your audience on your post for longer.

All of these things need to be done regularly to boost your profile on social media and have the algorithm work in favour of your business. These actions can be time-consuming but are ultimately worth it to build traction with your audience and see this reflected in your sales.

Are you too busy to invest this amount of time and resources into your social media marketing? There are experts in this field whose job it is to assist your business. The second part of Gardner’s quote goes something like this:

“Surround yourself with people who not just support you and stay with you, but inform your thinking about ways to WOW your online presence.”
