Productivity Hacks for For People That Put the ‘Busy’ in Business

Productivity Hacks for For People That Put the ‘Busy’ in Business
November 7, 2017 Carly

Owning a business can be a tough gig and sometimes (*cough* most of the time) you are probably feeling like there is more of a to-do list than there is a day. But what if we told you it didn’t have to be that way?

Productivity hacks aren’t a new idea, but one we definitely wanted to explore. As a team, we manage well over 20 businesses, plus everyone here has varying degrees of craziness in their personal lives (our Hannah is even in wedding-planning mode!). Safe to say, we have all found ways to become productivity machines.

Here are some of the tricks we use to make sure we are working at our best and getting the most out of our days…

I say: wake up early.

Ever heard the saying ‘the early bird catches the worm’? Of course you have! Because it’s a legendary saying and has some serious merit.

By waking up at 6 am instead of 8 am, you are gaining an extra two hours. By waking up 30 minutes before the kids, you gain 30 (blissful) minutes. I think you are getting my point.

Waking up early literally adds years to your life. Think I am crazy? If you woke up 2 hours earlier every day for the next 50 years, you would gain over four years of life. No dark magic here, just you, quite literally, manipulating time.

As you can probably tell, I am the biggest advocate of waking up early. It allows me to:

  • Add years to my life.
  • Set myself up so I can hit the ground running come 9:00 am.
  • Exercise (get that over and done with straight up).
  • Make a delicious and nutritious breakfast (which is the most important meal of the day!).

I could literally talk about the benefits of waking up early all day. To be honest, it would just be quicker for the both of us if you just did it.

Amber says: make your bed!

Now that you are waking up early and feeling like a superstar you can tackle that unmade bed. Is it fun? No. Will you enjoy it? Nope. But do you know what you will enjoy? Pulling back those covers at the end of long and tiring day and jumping into a cosy bed.

There are also some added bonuses to making your bed.

Added Bonus #1 – It immediately makes the messiest of spaces feel tidier.

Added Bonus #2 – Unexpected visitors think you are the most organised person when they see you have made your bed.

Added Bonus #3 (my personal favourite) – you get an immediate hit of dopamine for successfully completing a task, which encourages you to keep doing just that for the rest of the day #Win.

Need more convincing to make your bed? This inspirational speech by Admiral McRaven, a Navy Seal, should do it for you.

Sophie says: put a good beat on.

Sophie is a music fiend. She is the type of person that knows every word to every song and if there is a music festival coming to town you can bet she will be there! So it’s no surprise that Sophie is most productive when bopping along to her favourite tune. She finds that it not only improves her mood but motivates her to work faster.

Disclaimer – this is not for everyone. Some people work better in silence and solitude, like our copywriting sweetheart Clare.

Clare says: find a quiet corner.

You will probably never find Clare at her desk, and can we blame her? We are a noisy bunch! Clare is one of our epic copywriters and far prefers a quiet corner to work. She finds that quiet allows her to focus and dedicate all of her attention to the task at hand.

Struggling to get something done? Lock yourself away in a quiet, distraction-free space (and no, your phone cannot come).

David says: the first step is the hardest, so just stop whining and do it.

The procrastination police are here…David has zero tolerance for procrastination when it comes to his work days and is a ‘sit down, shut up and get it done’ kind of man.

He says “the first step is always the hardest so you are better off just taking it.”

Wise words David, wise words.

Hannah says: cofffffeeeeeee

Okay, Hannah said what we are all thinking and that is…coffeeeeee. Do I really need to say more?

Everyone says: Reward yourself (with snacks).

Guilty! We are a little too obsessed with food here, especially when it comes in snack form. Struggling to finish that report? Promise yourself a delicious donut at the end. You will be amazed at how effective it is…In desperate times I have been known to reward myself with a square of chocolate as I reach every checkpoint. What can I say? You gotta do what you gotta do, to get the job done.
